The Reverse Briefing

When to use it

You've been handed a vague request. "Can you look into why signups dropped?" or "The board wants something on retention." You have data access but no clear question.

How it works

Instead of writing the perfect prompt, flip it. Dump everything you know about the situation — who's asking, what you think they want, what data you have — and ask the AI to interview you. What are the three most likely analytical questions here? What would a useful deliverable look like? What data would you need?

You're not asking the AI to do the analysis. You're using it to turn a fuzzy request into a structured starting point.

Why it works

It shifts the cognitive load. The AI knows what parameters it needs and asks for them. You just answer. Voice input makes this even faster — more context, less typing.

Where it breaks

The AI will give you plausible-sounding analytical questions even when it doesn't understand your business. The quality of this workflow depends entirely on how much real context you provide. Skip the context dump and just say "why did signups drop?" — you'll get generic questions that waste your time.

The judgment call

Use the AI's briefing as a draft agenda, not a plan. Cross-check against what you know about the stakeholder. If one of the suggested questions makes your brain light up — that's where to start.

The Expert Council

When to use it

Your visualization is technically correct but generic. Boring. The AI generated the "average" of its training data — the safe, corporate-default chart.

How it works

Pick 3 experts with different philosophies. Edward Tufte for minimalism. Giorgia Lupi for data humanism. Alberto Cairo for truth in charts. Ask the AI to critique your work from each perspective: What would they say works? What would they criticize? What specific change would they suggest? Then synthesize the critiques into 3 concrete improvements ordered by impact.

Why it works

Invoking specific people activates specific subsets of the AI's knowledge. "A good designer" is vague. "Edward Tufte" is precise. The clash between philosophies surfaces real trade-offs instead of generic advice.

Where it breaks

Generic personas defeat the purpose. If you just say "an expert," you get the same averaged-out response you started with. Use specific names or well-defined schools of thought. And remember — the AI is approximating these perspectives, not channeling them. It's a useful heuristic, not peer review.

The judgment call

You don't have to follow every critique. The value is in seeing your work from angles you wouldn't have considered. If Tufte says "remove the legend" and Cairo says "keep it for precision" — that tension is the insight, not the individual recommendations.

The Narrative Context Dump

When to use it

You have quantitative data but the numbers don't tell the whole story. You know why something happened — team changes, a product launch, a policy shift — but that knowledge is in your head, not in the CSV.

How it works

Open a speech-to-text tool and talk. We recommend Monologue. Ramble about what happened, what you know about the period, what conversations you had. Don't worry about structure — messy is fine. Then feed that transcription to the AI alongside your data and ask: Do the numbers support what I'm saying? Are there contradictions? What patterns in the data could be explained by this context?

Why it works

LLMs are surprisingly good at processing unstructured text and cross-referencing it with structured data. By combining your qualitative domain knowledge with quantitative analysis, you get storytelling — not just reports. The data tells you what happened. You know why. This workflow connects the two.

Where it breaks

You'll be tempted to skip this because it feels like extra work. It is extra work. But it's the difference between a generic analysis and one that actually explains what happened. The failure mode isn't that the AI ignores your context — it's that you forget to include something important, and the AI confidently fills the gap with something plausible but wrong.

The judgment call

If you find yourself rewriting the AI's output more than twice, you probably left out critical context. Go back and add it instead of trying to fix the output downstream.

The Visual Reality Check

When to use it

The AI just generated a chart. Something looks off but the code ran without errors.

How it works

Take a screenshot of the generated chart. Paste it back into the chat. Ask the AI to explain what it sees — as if it hadn't created it. What message does this communicate visually? Does the visual trend match the data we discussed?

Then name what bothers you: "I see X, but the data said Y. Why is there a discrepancy?"

Why it works

Forcing the AI to "see" its own output triggers a re-evaluation. It's like reading aloud what you wrote — errors become obvious. The AI can write code that runs cleanly but calculates wrong: summing averages, confusing axes, inverting scales. This catches those.

A real example

In a live data session, a chart showed May as the peak month, but visually November had the tallest bar. The Reality Check revealed an error in the highlighting code. The chart looked polished. The data was wrong. Nobody would have caught it by reading the code alone.

Make this automatic. Every time AI generates a visualization, feed it back. It takes 30 seconds and catches errors that would otherwise ship to stakeholders.
